Assisted living is a more independent living facility for the elderly. They need a much lower level of care. Usually there are 1 or 2 charge nurses on duty at one time along with the CNA's.
A nursing home is a more dependent care type facility. The residents need a much higher level of care. There will be alot more skilled nurses and CNA's working each shift. Hope that helps.

The difference between assisted living facilities and nursing homes is that nursing homes are awful, also senior care group homes are really expensive, so it's the best to choose an assisted living facilities and if you afford paying 2000-3000$ per month the living is more than decent. Here's a list with great living facilities: http://losangelesassistedlivingfacilities.com/city/assisted-living-pasadena/ .

A nursing home is a healthcare facility. They provide 24/7 licensed nursing care. They are licensed by the states as healthcare facility and can get Medicare/Medicaid/private health insurance payments for the Medical care that is rendered. They are one step down from a hospital. In other words, the patients are sick or recovering and cannot care for themselves.
An assisted liviing facility is more like supervised apartment. They are not licensed as healthcare facility. They maybe licensed but not as a healthcare facility and they will not have same licensed medical personnel available. The residents are basically well but need help to do daily stuff like cook or get to the doctor's office.

I found out that each state uses different terminology; so you may have to check with someone in your state. However, where I live, nursing homes are for people who required skilled nursing care or are unable to take care of any of their person needs. Assisted living is for people who may on occasion need assistance. Usually in both the meals are provided so that the resident does not have to prepare his or her own meals.
When I checked into it for a relative of mine, I found that assistance living centers will come and check on the person if he or she does not make it to meals. However, if he or she requires too much help they will be asked to leave there. They are there for assistance only, not to give complete care. The assistance living centers also do not give custodial care. That is if the person cannot bathe themselves, etc. assisted living is not for that person.
Like I said, check the terminology used in your area to be sure you get what you want.

Depends on where you are at and the level of the assisted living. Most have someone who pops in daily to make sure all is well, help clean and keep the place nice. This can be kicked up to a point where hourly visits are made to the room to check on people, but they still retain a certain amount of Independence.
Nursing homes provide a higher level of care, but less Independence for the residence. The best rule of thumb is " what level of care does my loved one need?"
If they can function on their own, with just a little help, then a minimal Assisted Living apartment would work for them.

A 'nursing home' is for people who are 'too ill' and need to be 'in bed' most of the day, or are in 'wheelchairs' ... an 'assisted living center' has 'apartments' for its residents, but offers meals and some 'medical care' 'onsite' (meals are usually served in a 'dining room' not in the person's apartment) ... I hope this helps you ...

I actually have worked in both, and the difference is that in assisted living facilities, they are able to do for themselves most daily tasks.Usually, they just cannot be left alone or do not wish to be alone. However, with nursing homes, most people are not able to perform daily tasks by themselves and alot of times completely confined to a bed.

Assisted living is apartment style housing, where the senior has their own space, most likely with a kitchen, and is able to care for themselves as much as possible - with the assistance available for whatever they need, such as laundry, meals, medications, transportation, etc. It allows them to stay independent.
Nursing homes are more for seniors/disabled persons unable to care for themselves. Most have only semi-private rooms, with most or all care (bathing, medication, meals, cleaning) provided by staff.

Most assisted living centers allow you to have your own room that's somewhat apartment-style and you can come and go as you please. Nursing homes provide round the clock nursing assistance and care.
