from what I remember, the required minimum is two years..... that is the least you can sign on for..... the "normal" enlistment is four and then re-up if you want....

my father was a "lifer" in regular army.... his first stint though was for two years.. he got out at that point, got married and was a civvy for the next two yrs before re-enlisting.....for another twenty-plus years..... brother and sister both enlisted one at four years, one at two years.....

the answerers who said ask the recruiter and one who put up a link are right... you should get it straight from the source.....

good luck!
hope this helped

your active enlistment time depends on what job you choose. some jobs only require a 2 year enlistment, some require 5, you would have to ask a recruiter what the enlistment time is for each job. there is a catch though, every one who enlists serves a total of 8 years. you will serve active duty for whatever time you sign on for, and if it is less than 8 years, you get put on IRR (Individual Ready Reserve). this is nothing like the Army Reserves or National guard, you dont train or do anything with the army for that matter, but if they need soldiers they can re activate you. if you have any more questions feel free to ask me, i have been there and done that.

not that i'm a recuiter but i know last year they were needing new recuits so badly they were offering 15 month first enlistments. I would think enlistment starts at two years. When you re-enlist it's at least four years but i'm fairly sure your first enlistment can be two years. But remember your only gonna get two years of college money and not much of a signing bonus for that short of a contract. If you go to www.goarmy.com you should be able to look up all the info and requirements on enlistment and find the best local recuirter for you. Good luck and I wish you the best with whatever you decide.

You can enlist for a min of 2 years. Bonuses start getting larger around 3-4 years but remember...no matter how long you sign up to be 'active'...you HAVE to sign up for 8 YEARS! Say you do 4 active...you are there for 4 more years as 'inactive reserves' and they can recall you. Go speak to a recruiter but listen carefully and ask a lot of questions.

When you enlist you committ to 8 years... you'll agree to a certain number of years active depending on MOS, needs of the Army, if there is an enlistment bonus, etc... then you will serve the remainder of the 8 years in the Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR) during which time you could be called back at any time... although even during this war...I know of very few who have been called back... you'll find that all out when you get ready to sign on the dotted line....

all contracts are for eight years. the specific job you get will determine how much of that 8 years will be spent on Active duty. it can be as short as 2 years to as long as 6 years. the longer the training, the longer the AD commitment. the remainder woill be served in the reserves or IRR.

8 yrs total

The Army is dramatically expanding it's National Call to Service (NCS) Enlistment Program, commonly called the "Two-Year Enlistment."

Congress mandated that all of the military services offer the NCS program, effective October 2003. Under the NCS program, a person enlists on active duty for a period of 15 months, following basic training and job training (which makes an average 24-month active duty enlistment period).

*****Everyone who enlists under the NCS incurs a total 8 year military service obligation. *********
Following the active duty commitment, recruits will have to accept one of the following:

Reenlist on active duty (for a time-period that will be specified in the original enlistment contract)

Serve two years in the active National Guard or Reserves (this means a minimum of drilling one weekend per month, plus training for two weeks per year, plus the possibility of being recalled to active duty by the President for deployments/contingency operations, etc.).

After serving for the additional time period mentioned above, the commitment is not over over yet (remember, this is a total eight year commitment). Whatever time remains on that total eight year commitment, must be spent in one of the following programs:

Active Duty
Selected Reserves (The one that requires weekend drill and two weeks per year training)
Inactive Reserves (The program where you can be recalled to active duty if needed, but don't perform weekend drill or annual training)
Other program such as Peace Corps or Americorps
Combination of any of the above

MOST enlistment contracts are for 4 years, however, there is a TWO year enlistment contract. Read the following for more info.

The minimum is, yes, 4 years. There's nothing you can do about that. Don't join the Army. Join the US MARINES!!! They're 10 times better.

4 years is the standard "stint" "tour" or whatever. If the Specialty that your going after is in high enough demand and you have credentials - I have heard of even shorter tours. But 4 is the standard.
