I once had a get together where there was this really cute white guy, the only white person there in my apartment. I sat down next to him and was quiet for a couple of minutes, discreetly checking him out. Then I said to him, "Guess what?" He said "What?" And I answered "Chicken Butt." There was a look of surprise on his face, then we both laughed for about ten minutes. After that I said to him, "I guess chicken butt is universal." We were cool after that. So I suggest a joke as an ice breaker. You never know.

The first thing you have got to do is to relax. It's not that serious. A sincere complement alway's goes a long way. People like to be complemented. I complement strangers all the time on an outfit that they are wearing. Try it.
