just read a book, or a magazine while your're in bed, as i use to suffer from insomnia and that helped me

The worst thing to do is watch TV, as that keeps you awake

Also if you wake up late (11am) you'll find it harder to sleep at night.

get into a cycle where you wake up early (7 or 8am), that why you'll fall asleep easier at night

Keep away from the pills

Insomnia is without question due to a number of issues. Too many to list in this answer! But a couple might include, stress, a depressive disorder or something as elementary as a lot of caffeinated drinks before bed. There is really no way to determine in Yahoo! Answers the key reason why a person has sleep problems and your best bet is to speak to a medical doctor. Before the medical doctor you should attempt a few homemade remedies. Never drink caffeinated drinks before bed, aim to do a bit of physical exercise for you to tire yourself, but yet do this during the day or early evening hours as immediately following training you will feel alert. Find some good over the counter remedies if this does not work consider your doctor. You can get unwanted effects to some prescribed sleeping medicine and if you go through any you ought to again return and speak with your doctor.

I have suffered from this for years and more recently I was sleeping only one or two hours a night, sometimes not at all. Obviously you can't go on like this indefinitely as it begins to affect every aspect of your life.

There are some people who suffer from what is called 'delayed sleep' - they cannot get to sleep before 5 or 6 am and then will sleep a full 8 hours if left to do so. This has become more widely acknowledged as an actual syndrome rather than bad sleeping habits, and teenagers often suffer from it.

In my case, I felt that my lack of sleep was impacting on my health and I had to ask the GP for help in the end. He gave me Trazodone - a light antidepressant / anti-anxiety pill that has the added benefit of making you drowsy, so you only take one at night. Next day you just feel calmer and less easily irritated and eventually, after a few weeks, a proper sleeping pattern should be restored.

I would advise you not to reject pills out of hand - do a little research then speak to your GP.

Good night!

It may sound old fashioned ,

Relax
have a warm shower at bed time
followed
but a hot milky drink
a warm bed
and a good book

do not force yourself, to sleep, at night ,
we do not all, have the same time clock
or identical sleep requirements .

Try to avoid cat naps, during the day .

I send myself to Yahoo answers ,
when i feel 'wide awake' ( 2am )
that is when, i can be guaranteed,
to write the silliest 'answers' .
Till eventually, i creep up to my cosy bed again .

Try not to let insomnia , get you down
If you,are still worried, about your sleeplessness

go and see your Doctor and discuss it with him
all the best

I went to my doctor told him about my porblems he gave me 2 choice anti depressants or sleeping pills. Anti depression pills took one chuck the rest.

Doc wasted my fcuking time. He dont what he was talking about. Get some therapy or counselling. Get to the root of the problem. Good luck. I have the same problem. I dont trust pills either.

Researchers have found that people who find it hard to get off to sleep are usually deficient in their levels of serotonin, the synthesis of which also requires large amounts of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) which is found in carrots, cheese, avocado, fish, lentils, peas, potato, spinach, sunflower seeds, and wholemeal flour.

If you suffer from insomnia, you should eat more of these foods and cut out the high sugar foods such as white bread and white rice, which can cause fluctuations in blood-sugar levels. Stick instead to a high carbohydrate diet, which maximises the presence of L-tryptophan, a form of tryptophan, in the brain. In fact, those who eat a carbohydrate-based diet of quality wholefoods are found to be calmer, rarely depressed, and better to sleep soundly than those who do not.

Turkey contains a large amount of tryptophan, which might explain why adult members of the family fall asleep straight after the traditional Christmas meal; combining it with a complex carbohydrate, say a spoonful of honey, will enhance the effect. It does this by increasing blood sugar levels, which in turn causes the pancreas to release more insulin. This then has the knock-on effect of chasing several of the amino acids that would normally compete with tryptophan for receptor sites in the brain from the blood into the liver, leaving the coast clear for tryptophan to dominate. This is one of the finest examples of psychonutrition - using food to influence mood
