All I know is that if two African American people call each other that it isn't bad while if a white person says it to them it is a bad thing. I personally think it isn't too bad but you still probably shouldn't say it

It is offensive and has been for a very long time. The word has had a few transformations from the Latin "niger" meaning "black". A variant was "*****" and from that came "neger" and then "****er". "*****" is still around as is another variant "nigra". The word reached its peak during the years of slavery in the USA but then after the abolition of slavery it was used to mark ex-slaves and their children as second-class citizens at best. The word contains a level of contempt for the people it is describing.
Some African Americans use the word but most people find it offensive. There is no justification for its use.

DMD doesn't have a clue of what she's talking about. The word has been a denigrating way of refering to blacks since before the Civil War. It was used the most in the Southern US but a lot of Northerners used it as well. It is not liked by anyone who has a shred of decency in them. I'm sure you wouldn't like it if every man referred to you as a B**** , a Sl** or a Wh***.

If you use it, the only people who wont form an instant negative opinion of you are others who use it. Overall, you should never employ its use. If you choose to use this word then perhaps you have limited language skills to express negativity to another person.

I don't think it's right that people use it as an insulting term, but I also think it is hypocritical that some African Americans use the term but are offended when others use it.

This word was referred to African American slaves. They don't like to recollect those days and this word reminds them of it. So kind of you call African Americans as they are slaves as they were before and it really hurts them.

There were N i g g e r s before there were Afrrican americans. Couldn't you see the merchants in slave trading days..."Mr. Wilson, I need to buy fifty african americans to pick my cotton!"
