before i met my hubby and was just a college student supporting the troops i went to www.anysoldier.com, but the adopt a platoon that was also mentioned is a well known nation-wide site. You can also do things through the USO. As for cards and letters before 911 you could just address cards to "Any Soldier" and put the mission like "Operation Dessert Storm" or "Dessert Shield" and it would go to someone. Anything marked to any soldier will now be discarded. You have to send to a specific address howerever you can send multiple items to one address (or one box) and a note saying to pass things around or in an ATTN line put any soldier. A website specifically for small mail and card writting teams is www.lettersfromhomeprogram.org also a nation wide well know site run by high school students in cali. It was made famous by John Micheal Montomergy's "Letters from Home". That will get you started but if you really get into doing care packages there are guidelines, requirements and suggestions to be followed. You can also find those online or just email me.
Hope That Helps and Good Luck, The Support Means A lot,

I am also a person that is very deeply involved with the support of our men and women serving overseas. I am having the youth group at my church participate in the Any Soldier program through the website www.anysoldier.com. We have "adopted" 5 soldiers/marines and their respective units to send letters, cards and care packages to throughout their deployment. This site has almost 4,000 servicemembers from all branches associated with it. The plus to this site is it is updated many times each day, so it definitely helps you in planning your mailings. Just be advised you would not be the only person adopting the person you select.
I would also like to direct you to www.americasupportsyou.mil This website is set up through the Department of Defense and has TONS of websites listed to find a Troop Support network.
I will have to say these men and women really look forward to getting things from home, even if they don't know who you are. We have gotten some good feedback from a few of our adoptees. Not all will write you back and dont expect them to. Also, be sure to read up on what things are allowed/not allowed to be sent. Do not have anything with glitter on it if sending cards, they cant have it because it shines and sticks on their skin and ACU's, and no nudity, pork products, or aerosole anything. Good luck and I hope the kids find this a great learning experience. I think its the best way civilians can show their patriotism and get their hands into helping in the war effort.

I don't know about a legit site....but I know a couple soldiers you could adopt. My husband is in Iraq right now. You might get in contact with RD (that's Rear Defense) at 10th Mountain. I know they have some of the most deployed units in the Army to both Iraq and Afghanistan.

My previous job was an events planner for a financial corporation that dealt strictly with military personnel and their families. We adopted soldiers and their families several times. There are a few organizations that you can go through. The first one I would suggest is Association of the United States Army or AUSA for short.
http://www.ausa.org/ .
Another good organization is USO where you can arrange to send provisions and care packages.
http://www.usocares.org/src/uso_home.htm
Another organization to help struggling soldiers families is Operation Homefront.
http://www.operationhomefront.net/
I hope you find one of these great organizations to be as helpful as I did. I would especially recommend AUSA. Thanks for your support of our troops!
