There are several reasons, including the fact that Black History month was started in 1976 and the use of "African-American" as a term wasn't widely used then. In fact, Black History Month was set up as a replacement/extension of "***** History Week". It was clear that "*****" was no longer a term that was going to fly. "Black" was a term that was modern and nonoffensive in 1976, and is also considered nonoffensive today. It helps when you are talking about people with ancestry not only from Africa, but possibly from other areas as well, like South America or the Caribbean. Aboriginal Australians also have dark brown skin tones. People who have lived in or have family histories based in other areas don't always want to be called "African".

Also, Black History Month is observed in Canada and the UK as well as in America. It would be kind of weird if you called Canadians and British people "American."

Chineese and japaneese? in simple terms because of the fact they are the two asian? Oh, sorry I easily have been relating myself as american, yet fairly we are english individuals. do no longer for get with regard to the interior of sight individuals from wich we stole this land from!! can we've a close-by american historic past month?
