I moved to Mesa a year ago from Albuquerque and have yet to find a really good mexican restaurant out here. I guess I am used to New Mexican cuisine and all the restaturants I've been to out here seem more like Tex-Mex. Does anyone know of a place that would be comparable to New Mexican cuisine? Carlsbad Tavern is the closet I've found so far but not great. Thanks. :o)

We had the same problem when we moved here from Albuquerque years ago, and I'm sorry to say I think the mexican food is better there! There is a Garduno's at Chandler Fashion Center, but it's not the same at all. One really, really good mexican restaurant (it's more of a fast food place than a sit-down restaurant) is Carolina's in South Phoenix. Here is the address:

Don't be put off by the way the outside looks, it's kind of run down, but the food is fantastic! It's always busy, but it's worth the wait. Enjoy!

I would try Richardson's - Cuisine of New Mexico. The food is awesome, call ahead though or you can expect to wait.

Los Dos Molinos is pretty good. So is El Encanto up in Cave Creek. Serrano's Pescaderia (NOT to be confused with the horrible Serranos chain) is not to bad. They are at 32nd St and Shea Blvd. There is always Arriba's, which is a chain, but has really good and spicy foods like you are looking for. My husbands favorite is the Carne Adobada,while mine always changes. They have great Margaritas too.

Garcia's restaurant is o.k...Popo's is good,Macayo's ispretty good too.I don't go to the hole in the wall Mexican places because alot of them aren't very clean.

I think Cafe Rio is good.
Salsitas is really good too, and they are more authentic.
Nando's, Garcia's, and Macayo's are have good food also.
