What is appropriate guest attire for a wedding on a golf course/Country club, at 5pm. I don't know if it's "formal". I am the father of the groom's girlfriend, and he will be in a black tuxedo. I purchased a long, black, strapless dress and I dont want to be too over-dressed! Please help!

The dress is long, but not "flashy" no sequins or anything like that, kinda plain. No spiked heels either, maybe 3" at the most.
And to answer "sarah", no I am not a man. The grooms father is divorced, and I am his girlfriend, not someone on the side.

My only suggestion would be to wear pearls and not diamonds. Pearl will be classy and elegant diamonds will be too jazzy and may make you appear to be overdressed.

Other than that, I would say what you have described sounds completely appropriate for an evening country club wedding, they are pretty stuffy.

as long as it is a simple elegant dress not too much cleavage you should be okay However if the grooms father is in the wedding that may be why he is wearing a tux if he is wearing a tux because he wants to then you will be fine. Why not ask if it is formal the invitation should say if it doesnt you are all right to ask. No matter what keep your accessories elegant and simple you dont want to appear too overdone as you are still the gf not the wife. Also as it is going to be an evening wedding an elegant wrap is a nice accent. Make sure you are not wearing spike heels as that may pose some issues walking as it'll make you feel really stupid if you lose your shoe while walking. I wear heels as often as I put on shoes and I have tons of pairs that are really high but without the spike

You are the father of the groom's girlfriend -- which either means father of the bride or that the groom has a girl on the side -- and you bought a black strapless dress -- which means that you're a man wearing a dress. This is either a joke or you need to seriously rewrite the question.

I don't think you'll be too overdressed if it's a "plain" black dress. As long as it's not a sequined evening gown you should be ok. Even if you do think it's too much of a dress, you probably look great in it or you wouldn't have bought it, so you could "tone it down a bit with the accessories and make it more casual.

You might consider buying a dressy bolero jacket or a nice shawl for covering up, just in case you might feel overexposed at the last moment. Black is just fine for a formal evening wedding, and your dress sounds very nice to me. As long as you keep your accessories classy and your confidence high, no one should say ANYTHING! Good luck!

No today that black dress would be appropriate. Also you can buy a knee length cocktail dress with spaghetti straps with a shrug. 5:00 PM is formal time.

My guess is a very classic dressy cocktail dress would be the safest way to go. You don't want to upstage the mother of the bride (or the mother of the groom if she will be present).

I think that would look nice, maybe find a shall that goes with the color of your "guys" tux. (ie: if the tie and or cummerbund is silver.find some sheer fabric).

i wouldn't go with black. Black is a color of mourning. the rest of it sounds great though.
