i had two parakeets, both blue, and 1year old each, and i just took in another parakeet from a neighbor who didnt know how to take care of it. the parakeet i added is yellow, female, and 4 years old. they're all just sitting there, only moving for food, and staring at each other, and even though i have two food bowls, the blue ones are teaming up on the yellow one. i afraid that if i leave them overnight, they'll fight or kill each other. i don't have a second cage, i need help asap!!

thanks,
a concerned budgie owner

Go out and buy one. Where's the cage that your neighbour had for the bird?

You should definitely go buy a cage right now, even if it's just a temporary travel-sized cage. Anything is better than being beaten up in this totally new surrounding. Firstly, the new one is scared. S/he's been moved from a home it's known for four years and is now with two other budgies that s/he's basically invaded the territory of. It's a very stressful time, and it's best that s/he be in a separate cage within viewing and chirping/hearing distance of the other birds. All of the birds sound very insecure and tense. It would be the best for all three birds if the yellow one was caged separately until all of them could adjust to this change in your home.

I suppose it wouldn't do much use to mention quarantine, but be careful next time you bring a bird home. Birds should be kept separate from other birds for at least 30 days so that any illnesses they're carrying can work their way out of the bird's system, and in this month's time, the new bird should be taken for an avian vet visit for a well-bird check to make sure all is well and that there is no risk your current birds would get sick from it. (Also the importance of additional cages - for quarantine)

Good luck.

get another cage asap, you just can't put the poor girl to the two guys, you need to give them time to get along and i guess no matter what it will give trouble if the other two are both males, they will always fight over the girl, don't leave them together or it might be get worst and I'm sure that not what you want.put them in two different cages so they can see and hear each other and give them time, but never let them together without supervising
