Muslim men routinely hold each other's hands and kiss each other on the cheek. Don't be afraid to remind your mother.
Oh they also dance together with no women present.

I was raised Catholic and we show love through hugging and music and lots of different ways. I have a friend who was raised Baptist and she was taught that music and dancing was a sin. I don't believe that any God would find that a sin. You can't question your religion based on the bad choices other people make. I don't think that hugging a boy is any big deal. But don't think that just because of drugs and sex that your beliefs are wrong. Stay true to what you know is right.

yeah I think theyre overly worried
and they have good reason to, but living within a non-islamic culture means you have to make compromises from your religion and faith all the time.
I gather youre a female? Women are protected a lot by Islam, but a good dose of common sense works best within such troubled times.
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of common sense.
Just hugging is seriously not wrong, but being physically touched all the time should be something to be wary of as boys will usually use those moments to take advantage of a girls body. They dont mean any harm, theyre just made that way hon.
So keep a good distance whenever youre in doubt.

Although they are your parents, they know best and have been your age before and have more understanding of life. They are stopping you before things escalate. They are thinking, first a handshake, then a hug, then a kiss, then rubbing...
I am a young women and would go crazy and flirt with men if it wasn't for Islam. But I'm glad of Allah guidance. If he is your friend I see nothing wrong in embracing him, but if you like him, because of the nature of love things can escalate very quickly unless you are very very disciplined.

He (the believer) kept his mind alive and killed (the desires of) his heart till his body became thin, his bulk turned light and an effulgence of extreme brightness shone for him. It lighted the way for him and took him on the (right) path. Different doors led him to the door of safety and the place of (his permanent) stay. His feet, balancing his body became fixed in the position of safety and comfort, because he kept his heart (in good acts) and pleased his Allah.

it's not "politically correct" to hug. a similar happeneing occurred at my city, when a boy in kindergarten kissed a girl he liked, and was expelled for "sexual harrassment." 0.0
School is like that.
It IS hard on your religion to just live life.
good luck with that crazy "politically correct"-ness, ',..,'
