If so, PLEASE have them tested for Rett Syndrome! It is HIGHLY misdiagnosed as autism and CP and is almost always exclusive to girls. My daughter was misdiagnosed and was recently tested and had positive test for RS. For more info: www.rettsyndrome.org

Thanks Pamela for passing this information on. Its a horrible condition but better if parent's understand what they're dealing with.

Smart Kat--yes, motor problems increase with Rett Syndrome. Especially fine motor skills. Sorry about your nephew. I know of many rett girls that have brothers with autism, so there is most likely a link. If your neice has not been tested for RS yet, please ask that she be tested. There is very exciting research going on right now...if she has RS she may benefit from a future cure.

Mister--sorry, you are mistaken about Rett Syndrome being exclusive only to girls. The genetic mutation in RS is on the X chromosome which boys only have one of. Since girls have that extra X they usually can live with the disorder, but with boys it is usually fatal within a year or two of birth. There are some boys who have an extra X chromosome (XXY) who have the same effects as girls. I know of at least one in my RS support group but know there are many others.

(I must have been VERY tired when answering, with all my typos - Well, here's what I MEANT to say.)

My brother's daugther has autism. If I'm not mistaken, she WAS tested for Rett Syndrome.

I read that motor difficulty worsens as the child gets older. My niece's motor problems have NOT increased. She's still very clumsy, though.

Her little brother was also autistic. (He died in a drowning accident 2 years ago this May.)
