I have got a shy guy, they are the best but because they are shy the often do not read signs, I found that direct was best.
My other half has just reminded me of a situation where I used the line "are we going to FCUK or what?" Now I would not necessarily advocate using that line but honestly just wait until he is alone then go and ingratiate yourself, tell him you have never seen him at X you think he would like it, you would love to take him, you will meet him at 8 on Friday! Do not give him too much choice he will only talk himself out of it.

start asking him to tell you about his love life. he may be gay because no man would be too shy not to notice or take advantage when a girl flirts with him
