According to the old saying...it's not the equipment, it's the photographer that makes the great photograph. But having the right equipment definitely helps!
If you are a serious photographer, I think you should look at DSLR models. I shoot Canon, myself, but Nikon systems are preferred by many photographers.

First ur budget of $500 is just too low...
it not even enough to get a entry lvl canon or nikon
Dslr.
For real serious photographer...
most usually go for the Canon 30D or the Nikon
D80, D200. These are Dslr are awesome having
tried them myself. They offer so much flexibilty and
speed.
But since ur budget is around $500, it gets a little hard.
Maybe u would like to go for the Canon 400D or Nikon D40
which is nearer and closer to ur price range. They are also
good cameras...user-friendly and are value for money.
if u dun not intend to get a Dslr, then u might one to get
a prosumer camera which is more cleary into ur budget of
$500. U might wanna try the Canon S3 IS, Sony H7

I shoot nothing but Canon myself. And I've been a pro for many years. Whatever you choose, make sure you can use different lenses on it.
