I am a German-born American and can speak and understand it because my mother spoke the language. It is extremely difficult to learn because the articles such as the apple or the tree have to be memorized whether they are male or female or nominative, declarative, accusative, or another grammatical case. In English, the orange is just a fruit that is neither male or female. In German, it is a fruit that has a female article. Some examples of German articles would be der, die, das, dem, den, desen, and others. Also, the "r" sound is pronounced in the throat and not in your mouth. I don't know about Rosetta Stone.

It depends on the personal abilities and the age of the person. At earlier ages it is really easy to acquire language skills but in the later stages of life it becomes a bit too hard to learn a new language.

Then today there are programs which use active immersion techniques.....they are said to be more effective than conventional techniques.

And it also depends on you level of determination and also your need levels. If you are to survive in a German village you will acquire vocabulary and speech very fast.

Well, that depends on you. I took 2 years of German in high school, and 2 years of Spanish. German has 3 genders for nouns - masculine, feminine, and neuter, ( der, die, das) while Spanish only has 2 - masculine and feminine(los, las). On the scale of 1 to 10, I would put German at 4 and Spanish at 1.

It's as hard or easy as any other language - every language has easy and hard things.

If English is your only language so far, you'll probably find all the endings confusing at first... but it's easy once you get a feel for it.

Rosetta Stone is a good program, yes.

It's crazy! If this is your first language to learn, as you said... don't do it. If you are good at an easier language ( I suggest Spanish, French & Italian) go ahead with German. Many of my students who attempt German, are exceptionally overwhelmed. I suggest you not take German primarily.

Deutsch ist nicht so leicht zu lernen.
German is not so easy to learn.

It is also a bit difficult to pronounce when it comes to the two "ch" sounds. The R is also very difficult to pronounce. Unless you have a great teacher. I taught all my college classes the ch sounds by asking the students to gargle with a (paper) cup of water. It's the same sound as the one of the German ch's. Tell your teacher:-)

It's 100% phonetic, so once you learn a few simple rules, you never have to worry about mispronunciation. There are a lot of very complicated rules regarding the gender of nouns. But I overcame that when I learned that every noun that ends with "chen" is neuter, or "das." For example: Madchen is a young girl, but is still "das Madchen." So just add "chen" to the end of every noun and you'll get it right:

For Example; Weltkrieg (World War) becomes, "das Weltkriegchen", W.C. (toilet) becomes "das W.Cchen", etc.

its one of the harder languages to learn, mainly because there is a lot of memorization required and everything declines. you have to pay attention to what things are doing in the sentence in order to decline them correctly (and after that you have to know the gender and the endings). it can be tricky, but it something to be proud of, especially if its your first language, just because its much harder than french and spanish. plus, its the second most common language on the internet, and its also important if you get into theology.
