It's about a man on death row and the nun who opposes the death penalty and comforts him as he's about to be executed. Some themes are the sanctity of life. Also, the nun travels to see the family of the people that the convict murdered and has to confront the brutatlity of his crimes. Even though he is repentant, the murders he committed were especially brutal and she has to consider if she still doesn't believe in the death penalty despite that (she still doesn't).

the character portrayed by susan sarandon is a nun. its based on a real event and a real nun.
