On June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip shot and killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne, and his wife, in Sarajevo. Princip was a member of Young Bosnia, a group whose aims included the unification of the South Slavs and independence from Austria-Hungary (see also: the Black Hand). The assassination in Sarajevo set into motion a series of fast-moving events that escalated into a full-scale war.

A load of rubbish. Oil was no where near an important issue until the 20's. Yes the Admiralty was looking at the plans for the New Queen Elizabeth class Battleships to be full oil burners unlike the rest of the main battle fleet which was coal forced with spray oil sometimes. The RNAF and RFC where only just coming into existance and the amount of fuel aircraft needed was very small, motor vehicles where hardly a great economic driving force either. So no oil was not a major factor in the First World War and only came to be so towards the 1960's when oil consumption spiralled with the general public being able to afford Motor Vehicles on top of the Industrial and Commercial uses.

A Serbian student named Gavrilo Princip was a bit pissed that the Austrians controlled his country. He felt Serbia should be independent. So when the heir to the Austrian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife came to Serbia to visit and try to discourage those rebellious tendencies, Princip shot them. At that point, Austria declared war on Serbia. Russia (whose people are related to the Serbians by language, culture, religion, etc) then declared war on Austria. Because most of Europe had spent the 50 years or so before WWI making alliances, in the end most of the continent was drawn into what was, in effect, a civil war.

There were a lot of factors, but the single event triggering the actual war was the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo in August of 1914. There isn't enough space to explain all the stuff leading up to this event; Europe was a collection of monarchies, and all the kings and queens were relatives. It was a mess. Your best bet is to look it up on Wikipedia.

Serbian intelligence financed Black Hand, a nationalist Serb terrorist organization, in its assasination of the Austrian Crown Prince, Arch DUke Ferdinand.

Technically it was Austria that started the war since Serbia did not declare war on AUstria, rather AUstria declared war on Serbia and began shelling Sereavo, thus prommpting Russian intervention, followed by German decleration of war against Russia, followed by French against German, followed by German incursion into Belgium leading to Englands decleration of war against Germany.

World War I was unofficially started when Gavrilo Princip assassinated Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

As my freshman history teacher told us, "There's two asses in assasination: the ass that does the shooting and the ass that gets shot."
