Hate to rain on your parade but if you can't be together and silent without it feeling akward then he is not the one. That is fine if you are just looking ofr a bit of fun, pretend to be interested in him and stuff he is into. But when you find the right boy for you you will be able to talk about anything and everything and it will feel so natural and when you do not need to talk you will feel just as comfortable just in each others company.
I know I am a soppy idealistic romantic but it is true honest.
Good Luck x

You could start by saying, "You know, I get really curious about what's going on in these awkward pauses between us! ...why we have them ...what is not being said here!"
[ of course, you find your Own Words to use there ]
It can help to approach something from 'HeadOn' - in a nice way - instead of finding strategies = 'games' to play that help one over these 'awkward pauses.'
If they are there, then they are there for a reason, and trying to deal with them and their causes is not only healthy, but can work towards having a healthier and better relationship together.
Good luck with it.

The fact that you need tips, so to speak, on how to start a conversation with your boyfriend is a sign that you are in the wrong relationship.
Pauses and silences should not feel uncomfortable or need to be filled when you are with the right partner.
Sounds like your relationship has run it's course.

ask him how his day was.
tell him funny things that happened in your day.
talk about tv/movies you like or hate.
ask him what food he despises or if hes ever eaten brains before!
its okay to have pauses but not too many, if you really find it uncomfortable you might want to look at if the relationship is worth it.. talk to him about how you feel its best to be straight up and honest! me and my boyfriend talk about sh!t.. weve talked about the stupidest things ever, about what we were like in primary school, what our teachers were like, what we ate for breakfast, even the last time we did a poop... we're strange but we're always amusing and we laugh alot which is great ;)
