Ok. We got a set of 4 new at&t phones from best buy. Hooked them up. They worked great right from the start. But last week they just stopped working somehow. You can turn them on and they're connected to the phone jack. Everything works like its supposed to. Except you dont get a dial tone. We checked things out...turns out the power had gone out and all the phone jacks didnt work (but the one outside did. so we still have a line). Weird part is I'm online right now. So the computer can connect to the phonelline...but for some reason the phone cant (Not even the old one). Anyways. I checked everything...phonelines, outlits, phones, etc...and I couldnt figure it out... but the next day when we got up everthing was working fine.
Well...to make a long story short...we lost the power a couple days ago and its happening all over again...except this time the phone didnt fix itself the next day.
PLEASE HELP!!!
Thank you

plugging the phone into the box outside seperates the wiring inside the home, therefore eliminating the problem, which appears to be a short... but it may be a broken wire, to determine this, dial the number from your cell or a diffrent number, if it rings there is a broken wire, if it is busy or goes straight to voice mail it is a short, and proballay one of the phones, perhaps one of the new phones...
unplug the phones from the phone jacks one by one untill the trouble goes away.. once that is done you will know what phone is defective, and yes sometimes new phones become defective. lightning, or power surges can cause damage to telephone equiptment, if it is a phone with an electrical power cord, like a cordless that is causing the trouble, disconnect from the power for 10 seconds, and plug back in , this may reset the phone, if that dosent work the phone needs to be replaced

You should unplug the main phone (take out batteries if that applies) wait a few minutes. Then re-install everything. Take the phone off the base and reapply to the base too.
You probably already did that, but just in case.
My house phones do the same thing, get weird. It was b/c my batteries were almost dead though. But for the longest time, I would have to unplug, take off the base, wait a few minutes, and put it all back together.
I would exchange the batteries or exchange the phone system you have for the same set. Sounds like faulty batteries.

Could be a number of things...
I'd rule out the house wiring as the phones did work. Sounds like you have too many phones plugged in. a BT phone line can handle a REN (ring equiv number) of 3, which used to be 3 devices. See your phones REN value, and the PCs (If not shown then assume 1) and if it's more than 3, then unplug a device or 2.

It could be that your dial-tone service has been turned off for some reason, i.e. non-payment of bill or some error on their part. Usually when this happens, if you're using DSL on the line (which it sounds like you are), the DSL service continues to work without the dial tone.

DSL runs different than the phone line eventhough it uses the same jack. Call the phone company and have them test the line and also come out to test the jacks.

Call your phone company they should be able to tell you. They will probably have to come out to your home to fix it.
