Is there something missing from a dogs diet if he is eating his own feces.?

Is there anyway to stop this bad behavior. It can't possibly be healthy for him to be doing this. I pick up his mess every time he goes, but he's sneeky and slips bits as soon as they hit the ground. I know its grose.

There is something you can get from the vet to put on their feces to stop this behavior. Sometimes they are missing something but more often than not it was when they were puppies they were not kept clean enough when they were fed or they were not fed enough food and the puppies ate feces along with food and it is just a nasty habit.

I've heard that something could be missing either Iron or protein.
