Ok, this is pretty stupid, but I'm gonna ask anyway.

My parents make me get my hair cut pretty much any time it gets long. Personally, I'd like to either keep it long, or shave most of it and get a mohawk.

According to them, because I do stuff in public (like orchestra concerts, playing piano for church, crap like that), I have to keep it neat, and they don't give me a choice in it. But it's my hair, so I should be able to do what I want with it.

Along similar lines, I want to get my ear pierced (I'm a guy), but I haven't even asked yet cuz they're gonna say no. I'm 17, so I don't think I can do it without their permission. How do I ask in a way that they'll say yes?

You know, once you are living on your own, with your own income, in your own home, and paying all your own bills ..

THEN is the time to establish what you feel comfortable with.

NOW ... given that you are still a dependent, living under their roof, eating their food, relying on your parents for everything (and despite the fact that you are doing quite well) ... you need to RESPECT your parents' wishes in regards to personal appearance and any other house rule that they have.

PLEASE respect them ... remember, that as adults, we work VERY HARD to provide for our children, and yes, it IS HARD WORK. We give up everything for our children ... and want them to be the best they can possibly be.

Is it so much to ask that you just honor their wishes at this time?

It is not going to be that long a period of time when you are finished with your schooling and on your own. ENJOY the time you have with your parents, and yes, HONOR their wishes!

Well, you don't have to wait long and you can do what you want to do so I wouldn't cause family problems over it. Now, if you're gonna hang around the house forever after you turn 18 like so many do today, then get ready for some fights, but that will be your own fault. I can't imagine parents actually controlling a 17 year olds hair, but whatever, it's a different generation I guess. Don't do a mohawk though, people just think you're a loon.

Well, you could tell them that you ARE willing to keep going to the Orchestra, playing piano for Church, etc. if you are allowed a more contemporary hairstyle. Otherwise, you want to cloister until you turn 18. Also, bring some pics of 'stars' with similar features to you, who have the kind of look you are going for. If this whole thing about short hair and no earing is just some weird homophobic crapolla, then reassure them on that front. Tell them that you can't attract a nice, fertile, wide-hipped babe without a new look!

Wow your parents are really strict, even though mine are too. For getting your ear pierced, I say do it anyway yea its going against them and not "honoring" them but god you're 17 you are going to be moving out soon and they probably will be mad at first but they'll get over with it they can't stay mad at you for that forever. If you want to grow your hair longer you can still grow it long but it can still be kind of neat, like you can have it skaterish but just comb it and it won't look so dirty (or just do it on your times you are performing). Also you can tell your parents that people do their hair like that and are in public a lot and they're just fine because they really are people don't care about that much its about your performance not how you look.

You have a year to go, wait and then do what you like with your appearence. Try to understand they see how society views people with mohawks, earings and long hair and those people tend to not get the best jobs, or chances. It's not right but it's just the way it is. If you want to go far in life then to a certain extent you have to look the part, if you take a look at pictures of successful people they usually don't have mowhawks. But good luck, maybe you'll be the first. :)

There's nothing wrong with having long hair if you keep it up meaning not dangling in your face, looks like you stuck it in a light socket (sticking up everywhere), and is kept clean. Like that guy on the movie Selena... the guy she married! He had long hair and it looked really nice in that pony tail ! As far as the earring... I would advise against it, but if you are determined to get it... you can do it yourself. Take ice cubes and hold it till your ear goes completely numb. It may take several cubes depending on your threshold. While waiting on your ears to go numb be soaking the earring and a needle in alcohol for sterilization!! You want to make sure that there are no germs... Anyway... Once you've gone numb and the sterilization is complete... take the needle and push it through your ear... If the ear is numb enough it won't hurt, but should feel pressure. Once the needle is through... add the earring and snap on the back. Don't forget to keep turning the earring... and sterilize it everyday!!

you are a teenager, hence natural that you'd still be rebellious and prefer to do things against your parents. Remember that you are still under the "care" (financially dependent) of your parents, so at this time, they still are responsible for your well- being. Go with the flow for the next few years, parents tend to want to do what's BEST for their kids. When you become more responsible, you might also become more independent by then, I'm sure. Parents were kids once too, they know it's their total responsibility to see to their kids well being.

In all honesty, i do no longer think of there is something you're able to do to make your self prettier once you're already exceedingly. the only element you may desire to advance on is your self-photograph. [shallowness to be greater precise] ok? your perfect on your mum and dad' eyes besides as God's eyes. [i don't be responsive to if that's what you had to pay attention yet i stated it in any case.] you look great don't experience like an unpleasant duckling cuz stunning now your a Swan~ God bless.

Well, worst case scenario is you put up with their ideas about your appearance for another year and you're out of the house.

As for the ear piercing, if they say no just wait until you leave for college. You keep the stud in for 6 weeks or so and the hole won't heal even if you take it out (which you can do when you go home for holidays).

Your a teenager. Rebel. Whether or not parents have good intentions for their children, they need to know that they wont be the boss over every detail of that kids life forever. If you let them run your life now, they wont stop trying.

Dont be an *** about it. Tell them what you wanna do to their face with civil manner, do what you say your gonna do, and dont back down before, after, or while its happening.
