My brothers & I are very close. Im 22, Patrick 21, & Michael 20. My family has a history of addiction problems. Pat has a drinking problem. He drinks the heavy stuff, even alone. We're dark Irish. Sometimes he gets violent. His friends are intimidated by him. I have seen him punch people; walls. In the past year he has broken his knuckles, wrist, & shattered his ankle. He argues; calls names. They moved to LA to pursue they’re dream of producing movies. They got into University Citys production school & start this summer. They are saving money at their current jobs. But Patrick started his excessive drinking again & this time it is worse then ever. Since October Pat has beat up Michael 3 times! The last time, 2 days ago, put him in the hospital. Broke his nose and he has stitches in his mouth. Now his anger is channeled directly to Michael. I know that Pat needs to get help for his drinking & anger problem. What is the first immediate action I should take?

You need to talk to Pat about it. If in his problem he is sending your brother to the hospital something needs to be done. After you talk to him talk to your parents and see if there is anything that you all can do to help him.

As far as his drinking... Patrick is only gonna get help once he realizes that he has a drinking problem and until then there's not much that can be done. Now, Michael could press charges against Patrick for assault. It won't be easy, but maybe Patrick will realize what he's done and maybe not. Michael does need to get away until Patrick gets the help that he needs and restraining order might do the trick if Patrick doesn't want to land in the slammer. It's a tough road that your going through and I wish you the best of luck.

First of all, if your brothers are violent like that, I suggest you stay out of the middle. I'm not saying you shouldn't care, because I know you do. It's just I would hate for you to get hurt in the process just expressing your opinions to them. What you should do is pray for them. Pray and ask God to take that violent spirit away from them and protect them and yourself. Sometimes when people have addictions they don't realize the pain they cause their loved ones. You must realize that it isn't your brothers acting that way. It is the evil addiction that is trying to take over them.

You can not really do anything.. your brothers need to get away from each other.. Pat will not stop unless he is ready to.. Honestly try to talk to him but he really has to do it for himself.. Tell Michael the next time his brother attacks him call the police and have him charged maybe then he will smarten up.. Good Luck
