A lot of dogs can damage their anterior cruciate ligament (like a football players knee injury) when playing. It sounds a lot like what you're describing, but only you vet can let you know for sure.
If it has been 4-5 weeks now, it doesn't seem likely that it would be a strain/sprain. I know your friend was trying to help, but her best advise should have been see you vet asap, not telling you its something minor like a strain.
This link will explain the knee injury:

Okay yes a sprain does take a while to heal but she could've torn her cruciate ligament (what football players usually go to surgery for). I would bring her to the vet and have him check it out. They can only see about the torn ligament only by x-ray and they would have to sedate her for that also. There is a surgery that can fix that. I work in an animal hospital and assist in these type of surgeries. In the end IF IT IS a torn cruciate ligament she would need surgery and a long recovery time of up to 6-8 weeks.
Check out this web page it will explain what a Cruciate is:

If it has been a month and your dog is still limping the answer is simple, take it to the vet. If she has had a soft tissue injury then she could take a long long time to heal or she might require surgery or she might never be sound again.

It will probably have to be X Rayed to find out if anything wrong. It could be a Chipped Bone sticking out into Flesh causing Pain. So Dog might need Operation to remove it delaying only makes it worse. There is a possibility that Dog might become lame if delayed so best take to Vet and get checked out. Good Luck.

How old is your dog? My dog limps when she gets up sometimes and moves a lot slower than she used to because she is getting old and has arthritis. That might be a possibility. If she's been in pain for several weeks I think it would be a good idea to get her checked out. It's certainly a good idea to know exactly what is wrong; that way you might be able to help your dog with the pain.

Take her to the vet. A vet tech cannot make an accurate diagnosis. You should have taken her weeks ago.

I would take her in, it could have anything, torn ligament, bad sprain, with injuries in dogs, they have to be seen to straight away, arthritis could be setting in.

It could be just arthritis, but bring her in anyway.
