To take care of? I guess it really depends on the boy's abilities and preference. Yahoo Pets has a great survey to find the right pet for him. Take it together and see what comes up. It gives you the top breeds that match what your qualities ask for.
Also, if he wants a dog, before getting the dog, have him wake up early (so that he realizes that it is more that just the dog, there are walks and such) and try to walk with him every morning and evening to do "fake" dog walks. Start the boy on a routine before the dog comes.
Remember after the fun of the dog wears off, that this will become YOUR dog when it comes to walking, feeding and picking up POOP!!! LOL!
Look for a new pet on www.petfinder.com an adopted pet can be the very best pet! Good Luck!

Assuming this is a responsible 12 year old then some of the sporting breeds like retrievers or pointers might be a lot of fun for him. They are very energetic and usually good natured. I'd pick a short haired breed so he doesn't have to do a lot of grooming or dematting because very few children can keep up with the grooming needs of a coated dog.

It also depends on what type of home you have.
Remember this kids will be going away to college in 6 years so this will then more than likely be your dog.
Ask your son to pick out 5 types of dogs he wants and then you do your research to find out which will work best in your home and environment.
Labs, Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, Standard Poodle, English Springer Spaniel (larger breeds)

Australian Shepperd, Border Collie, Beagle, Schnauzer, Pug are some med. to small dogs.

Just throwing out some choices.

I will have to go with a Retriever type dog. Like a lab or a retriever. These dogs are very obdient and tend to train fairly easy. We have one for my son to "grow up" with and they are the best of friends. My son is only 3-1/2 and so is the lab so they will have quiet a bit of time to grow up together.

I believe a Labrador Retriever would be the best for a 12yoa boy. He will be rowdy when he is ready to run and play and when he comes in the house he will be ready to lay around and be calm. He will be able to run and play ball retrieve until he cant hit the ball any longer, can swim in strong currents in case they forget and goes swimming where mom and dad said not to go. and protect him in case someone should try to hurt him and also be gentle with his other friends. I have smaller nieces and nephews and my labs are great buddies with them. My kids have grown up with Labradors and now have their own. When my grand baby gets here in July will get getting his own to grow up with as well.

lab and golden retrievers are great first canines because of fact they have a great temperment. yet once you desire something a touch distinctive, you should get a german shepherd or a woman husky or a mixed breed from a shield. fantastically lots any breed is okay for a 12 12 months previous. It in basic terms relies upon on the guy canines. you probable does no longer desire something too huge nonetheless.

If you have the room for it to play, a Golden Retriever would be probably best because they are so gentle and playful, smart, and well minded, and easy to train. I have two, and love them both. But if you don't have somewhere they can run, a Golden would be a bad choice because they need lots of room.

I am 12 and I really like my chocolate lab because she is so friendly and playful. Chocolate labs are really sweet but they are also extremely fun to play with. The only problem with them is that they are big.
