First of all, I consider myself to be a Christian (severely back-slidden) but I am working on it. Please remember, I am not trying to turn this into a political issue or athiest v. christian issue.

How come the supposed "Religious Right" tends to overlook the more important social issues such as Health Care, the Environment, starving children in the U.S. and New Orleans? Our current administration has done a wonderful job at ignoring these issues that are true indicators of morality and goodness. Yet in the same speech they imply they are responsible for restoring morality on the American homefront. Instead, we are trying to impose American ideas in parts of the world that don't even want us there. Do the fundamentalists think the world is going to end soon so we shouldn't worry about the environment, social security, health care or other post-rapture issues? What do you think?

American politics are very polarized. Christians tend to be associated with the conservative religious and political right, though this is not very accurate and there are many liberal Christian interpretations.

Unfortunately, the right wins votes by focusing on a few, polarizing issues that practically ignore health care, the environment, and government separation of church and state: gay marriage, abortion, and stem cell research (a smaller minority for the third). By wooing voters with these issues they can pretend to represent the backbone of the American family while conveniently ignoring other important issues.

You should go to the website for the Vatican. And read the popes' encyclicals and other writtings and writtings from cardnicals and bishops. The Church is always talking about good health, family values, saving animals, preserving lands, feeding the poor and clothing the naked, education for children, etc. It's just that things from the Church aren't published in local newspapers or told on nighttime news. the Church has some newspaper around the world for religious people to read and such. I subscribe to the Catholic Answers newpaper (put out weekly) and I listen to Christian radio daily. These issues are always addressed but the secular world tries to keep it out of reach as much as they can.

I would love to answer your question:

The current administration does not ignore healthcare, the environment, or New Orleans. To think that anyone could run an entire country and fix everything that is wrong with the wave of a magic wand, is a liberal ideology that the "Religious Right" does not care to partake it.

Unfortunately the Republican party suffers from something I like to call reality, and it is a view wherein we see the United States as a good thing. The Democratic party is living in a dream world where they think words can win wars. Unfortunately, we are at war, and unfortunately half of the country are made up of extremeist terrorists, and yes, you are correct, they don't want us there.

Social Security is a joke, and to think that this administration is ignoring it, is like saying water is no longer wet. Liberals in general feel like the Union should pay their wages whether they work or not, and then the government should support them once they are too lazy to *not* show up to work anymore, and they quit/get fired from their job that they never go to. The whole system is so beyond help, that the best way to fix it is to take the training wheels off the lower class and let them sink or swim in a privatized world.

Lets not pretend like this is a strictly non-political issue when your question was loaded to begin with.

For being a Christian that is supopsed to be working on it. You need to start thinking that religious rights is a better deal. It sounds to me like you are an Athiest politician that wants to blind everyone with stupid issues like health care and the environment. You probably watch Al Gore's movie every day and pray to him about global warming.
Religion is part of a persons character. Last time I checked this is America. If you already don't have kids, just wait. Eventually there won't even be American Flags to pledge to because everyone gets offended. Get your priorities straight...sinner.

The "religious right" is "right" first and "religious" second when it comes to what they espouse. Their goal is to elect right wingers. Right wingers do not believe in health care, hunger, or the environment. These are liberal causes. So the religious right will never speak on them or, if it does, will speak against them, regardless of how much they need to twist the bible to their own uses.

I am not sure which translation bassdog65 is using. Somehow the bibles I own don't include "the poor are a mess, let them sink or swim on their own" as one of the Beatitudes.

If there is a god, and if he does return, I can guess who he will see as the new pharisees.

I believe most fundamentalists (as you call them) are more worried about imposing rules for others to live by (forgetting that if they are not christians than they do not believe the same as christians)than about if there will be a tomorrow to rule. Yes I am a christian but my belief is personal and I will share with anyone that would like to hear but I do not force my God's will on others.

I am a religious person, but I have to say many so called religious people are the biggest hypocrites. Many people use religion to hide their evil intentions and as a way of making their evil actions justifiable to the masses. You are not alone. God will punish them soon enough.

Peace Be Upon You.

Because these issues don't make them money.
Know what makes me sick? These huge elaborate modern churches with some rich members and some who can barely get by. Their values are really screwed up. Each church tries so hard to build the best one in town. Ever know of a poor televangelist?

Why should we ignore any important issues of our faith? We should be concerned about health care, and the other issues you mentioned as well as issues like abortion, homosexuality, and seperation of church and state efforts that continue to try to pull God and morality out of our nation, its government, and our schools...should we not?

It could be they don't share your priorities, or they have a theory of government that makes them feel government interference in Health care issues would be destructive, and that private relief organizations are more efficient than government ones.
