Usually the otheir couple would come with gifts...but hey, I'm not arguing about you giving to others. Very nice! I wouldn't do anything too off the top, they wouldn't know how to respond. If I were you...I would maybe make a nice dessert, for example a cake, then I would make an extra and wrap in clear paper with a bow. That way, they can have their own to take back to their house. Or maybe a nice salad dressing...if you made your own you could put some in a bottle and send it back with them. It's tough...since I've never given my guest a gift. Enjoy your dinner...MAYBE this will help. Not sure at all...

Go to your local TARGET...they have a fabulous $1 section near the entrance... I was at my local Target Sunday and saw many NICE things for $ 1 ! Including these great cloth totes with cherry prints , army prints , pastel cereal bowl/ mug sets ( those were $2.50 )
If they are a gardening couple how about a watering can($3) with some easy to grow flower seeds( .60 each) ,garden trowel/tiny shovel set ( $1 each at $1 store) two pairs of gardening gloves ( $2) and include a little hand written note saying "Here's to growing the seeds to a great friendship" .... or something along those lines. Make the note of brown paper( paper bag) and secure with a ribbon to the can handle.

$5 dollars is a tight budget...Try Michaels Craft store, AC Moore or even the Dollar store (or anything similar).
The type of gift really depends on things you and your guests enjoy.
A inexpensive party favor that I used at one of my recent get together that every seemed to like consisted of:
-Two champagne flutes $1.50 each
-innocent fun dice (not the vulgar ones) $1.00
-and these really pretty candles (on sale) $3.00
I put the dice inside of the glasses boxed the candle and put it all in a pretty bag. I know this goes over $5 but you can substitute items or leave out things you dont like.
other items to use: picture frames, drink mixes (lots of fun ppl cant wait to get out the blender), personalized thank you notes.
I hope this helped

"good" gifts for $5? Hummm something edible. I would buy fancy nuts. There isn't much of anything these days that is of quality or "good" as you say that you can get for someone for $5 dollars...not sure what type of people they are or anything. You could buy them a couple of roses. Perhaps give them starbucks gift cards if they are coffee drinkers, i think they come in pretty little envelopes. If you cannot offer them something that is "decent" please i wouldn't bother getting them anything at all dear.

The host/ess doesn't usually give a gift. If you want, a cute gift would be two extra servings of the dessert, packaged nicely. Then, they've got an extra sweet thing to take home and it will remind them of your hospitality when they eat it.

Gift card to Jack In The Box, McDonalds, Dollar Tree, Dewar's Ice Cream... you know all that fun stuff, or some cheap bottles of wine, and you could always do grab bags!

I love Pier One. They have a ton of sales and it is nice stuff. I usually go there and get some of their candle holders (usually on sale) and some of the tealight candles to put in the holders.

I agree with the one who said they should be bringing YOU gifts, that is the proper thing. You might go more with a party favor type thing.

Candles are always a good choice. Or you know, things for the house. Whatever they're into, their hobby. You could always get them a pretty calendar!!!
