It's according to the particular department. None can hire you if you have a felony or domestic violence conviction, as it would be a violation of federal law for you to possess a firearm. Some require you to pass a polygraph and/or a physical agility test, but not all. some, not all, require a college degree. Also there may be state requirements for you be certified in that state (Peace Officer Standards and Training or P.O.S.T.). All will eventually require you to become certified through a police academy, and some will accept lateral transfers. That is, accept an out-of-state certification in lieu of their own.

the most important is to know the contract you enter with the people. your oath of office :
An individual, except the President, elected or appointed to an office of honor or profit in the civil service or uniformed services, shall take the following oath: “I, AB, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.” This section does not affect other oaths required by law.
I will SUPPORT and defend the Constitution of the United States

They have basic physical standards, but they arent that hard, I passed them and was horribly out of shape...Good background, no arrests, good driving records, they check your credit history, not having been fired from many jobs in your life is important, references...lots of things...And obviously you have to pass all the defensive tactics, driving manuevers, firearms, first aid, criminal law, etc, stuff you have in an academy, which is a ton of work and very stressful...
