The only interesting thing about NASCAR is that most of the races finish close. Other than that it's the lowest form of auto racing. Most of the races are left turns and when there is a race on a road course the drivers cry about how difficult it is. The cars are big, heavy and slow, the technology crude by racing standards. Look at track records, open wheels cars get around the tracks at more than 30 mph faster. Real racing is done on the open wheel, sports car circuits and European rally circuits. NASCAR is an embarrassment to the American culture. What a joke!

I'll start off by saying that I'm definately not a fan of NASCAR.
That being said, I understand why people like it. You can see all of the racing at any time. It also does have a much more open atmosphere. I think that is changing and will continue to change though. But for now, considering the money that is made in this sport, the drivers are much more approachable than many other sports.
I don't enjoy watching the oval format. I'd rather camp a corner and see clean passing in a tight corner instead of overtaking in a straight or a large sweeper. I would never argue that its not challenging to race NASCAR. I've been on a couple of ovals and it is fun. I just don't enjoy watching it.
I think most any driver has to be more athletic than people think. I don't think that NASCAR drivers have as tough a ride as some other racing. WRC and most any endurance driving takes much more out of a person.

First off, you are a real idiot. It's not an "freaking" circle, it's an oval. That's the common misconcept of NASCAR, that they are racing in an circle, they are NOT, people need to learn their shapes.
It doesn't have the Number 1 fanbase because of some of their states. Unlike other sports, these are REAL, down-to-earth people unlike the jerks that make 20 million an freaking year and have no respect for the fans. These are people who thank their fans EVERY chance they get because they know without them, they would be sitting at home with an 9-5. If you even look at the NASCAR schedule and did some REAL research, not all fans are from those states. They have New York, California, Texas, Phoenix, Michigan, and many other states that aren't 'hick' states. It has an 50-40 ratio of male to female, 60-40 African-American to Caussican viewership.
They have to be in top physical shape in order to endure the 130 degree driver's seat, seat in one spot for 3 to 5 hours and use more muscles than people think they do(stearing the 3200 pound car isn't easy). They have exceeding speeds of 150+ miles per hour, all the while driving an car that wants to dive into the wall by the backend and often have to escape potentially fatal car crashes, all the while facing death at every turn.
So, next time you decide to say something isn't an sport, know the knowledge of it before you start talking and typing.

Ok one there is team work in this sport. You have drivers helpin their teammates out. But you also have the pit crews workin on the car. The work as a team like football, baseball, basketball. You have the front and back tire changers, front and back tire carriers, the gas man, the Jack man, the catch can man, all workin as a team to change tires and refuel the cars, and makin adjustments on the cars. You have the crew chief who desides what changes need to be make, and when to pit. You also have the spotters who help the drivers make it around wrecks and that. Also a drivers heart rate is that of a marathon runners when running a marathon. So it's hard on the drivers. Many players who have driven in a racecar have said this is a sport that they could never do. But Nascar does involve teamwork. The other teamwork you would see is if a car go in a wreck you see them workin hard to put that car back into the race you can also see other team memebers for other team help work on the cars. Like in 2005 when Dale jr. wreck and some of micheals crew helped Dale Jr.'s crew fix the car to put it back on the track so yes I do consider Nascar a sport.

Sean,
First off thank you for your open minded attitude about NASCAR and it's birthplace. It wonderful to see someone who is generally interested in knowing more about our sport. Speaking as a fan, not from one of the states you listed, NASCAR is a sport of competition, endurance and strategy. Drivers do have to be fit to face all the challenges that come with a continuous 4 hour event. I find it odd for most people who make the argument that NASCAR isn't a sport but give no opinion on F1 or IRL racing. Do you consider those leagues sports or do you just have special feelings for NASCAR? Also, as you noted NASCAR does have a great fan-base, not just int he Southeast. Last week for instance NASCAR held two evens in California and next week there will be at least two events in Nevada. I hope this answerws your question and thanks so much for asking.

implicate "redneck hillbillies" tells me you are an underager or someone that has just joined the answers forum.
Fact sports are classified various ways,

competition sport,racing,(autos,horses,)
physical;football,basketball,hockey,boxing,
pure sports(purest belive any sport found in the olympics are true sports)
Every week some one ask this same question and gets many answers. It is time to over look the "narrow" minds so good bye!

Let's see.
Am I 'migrated' from a hick state, as you put it? No, I live in a city of 50,000 people, just on the outskirts of Boston Mass. I was raised in New Jersey, 30 miles from the BIGGEST city on Earth. I have been to the south, but am not from there. I am a northener.
That being said, I AM a NASCAR fan.
Oh, and since you think it's all left turns and go fast....why don't you try your hand at it, slap nuts? I mean, it must be so easy, according to you, even a 'dumb hick' can do it, right? Odds are, you'd splatter yourself all over a wall somewhere. Not that would be a bad thing......for you, I mean, and for all of us.
Edit: My son told me to tell you to go lick a light socket.

I once heard Darrell Waltrip answer this question and his response was: "Anyone who thinks NASCAR drivers aren't athletes, I invite them to drive 500 laps at night at Bristol. That will shut them up. Your comments about hicks and Southern states shows you are a narrow minded bigot who doesn't have a clue about the sport.

ahh...yet another jealous person who wants to bash NASCAR and all it's fans. Why do you bother even putting this question in here? You know that just about every person in here is a huge NASCAR fan and your question is just gonna get torn apart by the true NASCAR fans. You are such an idiot. And oh yeah...it's more of an oval not a circle...

What other SPORT does the athlete lose 10 pounds during the event. It takes great endurance to sit in a 130+ degrees of heat during a race. Also, there most not be a single fan outside of the south becuase there are more than your 100 that work in Nascar for a living. Just becuase you dont understand and cant participate in something doesnt make not a sport. We dont call you a damn yankee just becuase you are stupid do we.
