I will repaint my master bedroom in a few months. It is a dark blue color and we are repainting it a light brown color. What is the best primer you have used? And how much did it cost per gallon?

I work at Sherwin Williams Paints and I suggest that you prime it with a simple white primer. Depending on where you get your paint Your looking at a bunch of different prices.

Lowe's is about $10 a gallon
Walmart I would not bother it wont cover in one coat
Home depot is going to be the same price as Lowe's and about the same quality.
But of course I recommend Sherwin Williams Pro-block Latex Seals and Bonds depending on were you live it usually cost between $26 and $31 also you get your moneys worth because you might only pay $10 a gallon at the home improvement stores you might have to to more than one coat because their products are thin.
Our products our thicker and will cover more in one coat 350 to 400 sq. ft.

I have painted for years. My father taught me to do the job right the first time and you will not have to re-do for years. I always use oil base Kilz. I even use two coats (even though it recommends only one coat). Using oil base Kilz will not only block the darker color, it will also block oil, dirt, grease. You can't see it but those greasy hand prints are all over your walls. Also when you cook the grease goes through your house by way of air system. Like my father said "Do the job right the first time" Spend the money, don't try to save money on paint, primer, brushes, rollers, etc.....This paint job is something that you will be seeing everyday. Tape of woodwork, windows, doors...this will make the job go quicker. Use oil base on hard wood (facings) use latex on walls. Use a wall paint that you will be able to wash....remember the hand prints...around light switches..etc....Research color, texture, paint, before you start.

Zinsser Primer avail at Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. I painted my dark red semi gloss dining room with it, also had it tinted to match new color. I used the Bulls Eye 1-2-3. I've been using it for years and never a problem. runs about $15 - $18 here in Texas

I am a painting contractor in the luxury home market and the best primer is a tie between two ,they are so good you can prime glass with them and paint latex over it and not get any peeling or flaking, they are also used to prime rusty pipr railings at saltwater beaches, and I have primed everything else under the sun with them ,like fiberglass ,wood paneling etc. I am suprised none of the other contractors have mentioned them , one is X-I-M, and the other is called Mad dog......both are over 50 bucks a gallon, but so worth it.

Benjamin Moore "FRESH START" All Purpose Primer. Cost depends on what part of the country you live in. It's not cheap, but worth every penny. I've been painting for almost 16 years, and the more I use it, the more I love it. Good Luck!
