And no all I do with him is go to the park and play fetch. no poop, no human food nothing out of the ordinary, he’s currently on hill's prescription diet...recently started mixing it with hills science diet, don’t think that has anything to do with it. Either way he smells like a dirty rat when he comes in after a cold day all the time

unfortunately that's the way dogs are. I give my dog a bath, let her go outside and she comes back in smelling...well like a dirty puppy dog. keep some wipes with you, they now sell "baby wipes" for dogs and just wipe him up after.

also, watch the shampoos you use, sometimes those fruity smelling ones tend to make the dogs smell worse after they've been outside playing. they fruity ones smell good but aren't really good in the long run. you just need a shampoo that's gonna clean the dog, little scent is needed for that. Also, I've noticed when I use those "dog colognes", the dog smells worse after playing. a dog doesn't care if he/she smells fruity or like calvin klein, they pretty much don't care what they smell like, so get products that aren't so scented. not sure what you use as far as bathing products, but it's what I noticed with my dog high smelling bathing products so I try to buy the stuff that's unscented or little scent.....it's just sometimes I can't resist that fruity smell :-S

My dog has the same problem. A lot of dogs do. It is something about the chemical reaction of the air mixing with the dog's hair that gives off that awful smell. I just received in an email that when they come in get a Bounce dryer sheet and wipe them down with it that it helps/ I dont know if it works. Like I said I just recieved that info.

Are you next to woods or somewhere where alot of dead decaying matter may be like next to a road where deer commonly get hit? My dog goes out and if whatever nasty thing he can find he is happy to roll in the funk. Could it be he is doing that? Or perhaps he is slightly moist when he comes in, we all know the smell a wet dog can have. Try a penetrating shampoo ones made to "moisten" their skin I find the smell of the shampoo last longer and is stronger. Or talk to your vet there maybe more options out there then we know.

Is it that nasty musty smell of outdoors? I don't know exactly what causes it but I have noticed that even my kids hair will smell like that sometimes when they come in from playing outside for awhile. My dog does it too but luckily on him, the smell goes away after about 20 minutes or so.

Retrievers have a lot of oil glands in their skin and produce more "doggy" odor than some other breeds. Regular bathing is probably the only "cure" for this.

You may want to ask a vet, because he could be allergic to something outside. My sister's dog is allergic to vegetables and had to be put on Protozoan because the itching was so bad and she smelled horrendous.
