SAN DIEGO - The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection a few hours before it was to go to trial Wednesday in the first of more than 140 lawsuits accusing priests of sexual abuse.
The bankruptcy filing, put in at five minutes to midnight, automatically halted the court proceedings.

Midge and Ram Charger,
Why do you change the subject or divert attention from the violator?
I am not Babtist or have any other religious beliefs. The difference is I don't give the Catholic Church one cent. Do you contribute $$$ to aid in the defence of your priests? Of course you do! Why do you still attend Mass when this abuse has not been resolved? Those poor people.

Protection of the clergy doesn't happen only in the Catholic church, it is prevalent in Protestant churches, too, especially Baptists. Whenever a priest or pastor commits a crime, the pew-warmers will ALWAYS rush to support him, not the victims. It is very typical for Christians to throw the victims to the lions while giving the criminal pats on the back.
Meanwhile, where is the Holy Spirit when children get raped? Why doesn't God protect them? From the sheer number of such incidents happening again and again in churches all over the world, it is obvious that either God does not exist, or he hates Christians and wants their children to suffer.

Why shouldn't I look at myself in the mirror? I didn't abuse anybody and why don't they broadcast all the Baptist's abuses or the Lutherans or any of the others who are right there in the running for whose who in the abuser world. Statistics show Baptists are the worse? I think it's just because the baptists do not have a large network like the Catholics so there isn't any huge money settlements there like there is with the Catholics and people have been jumping on the bandwagon as far as the abuse accusations go, where they have never been abused but the lawyers for some of the other people have contacted them to try to say they were because the money was so easy. Someone on this very site has proof of that.

At what point do you consider someone distanced enough from a pedophile? You're a man, right? How do you look at yourself in the mirror when other men do it?
Are we all judged by what some sick individuals do simply because we belong to the same group?
I agree the Church should make this right, and disagree with this tactic, but don't lump all Catholics in with this situation any more than we lump all Arabs in with 9-11, blacks with Michael Jackson, football players with Terrell Owens, Yale graduates with John Kerry, rappers with Vanilla Ice, good food with liver and onions, or fine fashion with Mr. Furly.
--Edit-- In response to the "Additional Comment", at what point did I say I was Catholic, or that I give them money? Stop assuming things, and be open to discourse if you're going to ask these types of questions. You say I am off point, but re-read your question and ask yourself, what was the point? Do you disagree with the crime, or that the church is filing bankruptcy? Your main question was how can Catholics look at themselves in the mirror, and I answered that; the same way that you can look yourself in the mirror. You never actually stated it, but from the tenor of your question one can guess that you disagree with the tactic the church is using, and I agreed with you. Who's off point here, you or me?

Disgusting, is it not? I hope the bankruptcy is denied... All those years of stealing money from patrons under the guise of "charity" and not paying taxes on it, and now they wont even pay damages to those they have sexually abused?

Catholic here:
These tragic events are a time for healing. This time is a call for us to unify in prayer for those who were hurt, for forgiveness. How else can this happen if we don't turn these burdens over to God especially when darkness like this befalls us?
God bless.
