If you have ruled out any health problems / diseases, then usually dry flaky skin is related to a poor diet. Feeding a dog the right premium dog food will provide the nutrients necessary for a healthy skin and coat, without the need for an additional vitamin supplement.
My dog, even though on a healthy diet, gets dandruff on the back of her neck from her collar rubbing against her skin, I use a veterinary dry skin relief / moisturizing spray on her and rub it into her skin, it makes her coat smell good and makes the flakes disappear instantly and makes the skin feel instantly moisturized.
Also if you use a monthly liquid flea preventative it can cause some flaking of the skin on the back of the neck, shoulder area and along the back, which can be helped with a dry skin relief / moisturizer.
For a clean smell, there are dog sprays that you spray and rub into their coats to keep their coat nice and smelling fresh. There are also shampoo / cleaning pet wipes you can wipe his coat with.
A dog should be bathed no more than once every two weeks, but at least once a month. Being that dogs are bathed so rarely, I find that even pet shampoos aimed specifically toward dry skin / dandruff are not helpful in the long run because they are only used at the once a month bath. The issue needs to be addressed daily to give your dog relief.

What do you feed him? That has a lot to do with it...Nutro brand is what I feed my labs and it is garunteed to improve skin and coat or you get your money back...
I also wash my dog every two to four weeks and use a horse leave in shampoo in-between baths...It is called Miracle Coat Spray On Waterless Shampoo...it is sold in a large spray bottle in the horse section at Petsmart or it is in the dog section at petsmart in a foaming variety...it is the same thing and the horse size is more $ friendly...Just spray it on him and rub it in...use a reasonable amount...not too hard...
I believe diet is the biggest factor in coat and skin health though, so you may want to check into some other food brands...Nutro and Eukanuba are great brands, a little bit more expensive, but very much worth the cost.
PS...I worked at Petsmart for 6 years so I am not just pulling this out of my a$$....good luck!

Dogs do get dandruff or flaky skin. You may have to bathe him more often to help get rid of it, I would try once a month to start and go up to twice a month if needed. There are also shampoos that treat flaky skin that will probably help his skin, oatmeal shampoos are usually good for this or shampoos with tar in them.

There is such a thing. U can use human dandruff shampoo. Or u could go to the pet store and look for some. You can also get him spray for when he smells. And only bathe him 2-3 times a month if u need to and no more becasue that could be causing the dryskin...dandruff.
GOOD LUCK

We use a Shamppo called "Fresh & Clean - Oatmeal, BakingSoda Shampoo For Dogs." this stuff works great and leaves a longer clean smell on the your dog. You can buy it at just about any major pet store chain.

it's all in what you feed them. I give my dog a lamb and rice mix from healthy choice and her coat smell great!( I havent bathed her in 3 months also!) Also... the dandruff is a hereditary thing. Theres not much you can do but give crazy spa treatments if you have the money.
