You make a good point. However real slavery is what is happening in the textile factories companies like Tommy Hilfiger and Gildan set up in Central America. They pay the minimum wage, which I understand is the equivalent of about $100 per month (in Honduras). They need over three times that much to just barely live on. Now that is slave labour. Abusive slave labour.

Many immigrants come here for work because they cannot find anything that is worth it where they were. You are right. Many of them do the jobs that people here think is totally beneath them. They refuse to do hard labor sometimes because as a whole, we are a very lazy nation. Companies can hire cheap labor and use the law of minimum wage and they can still be in poverty. Yes, I do think it is a new form of slavery. No, they weren't bought and sold, but they are in a way, bought with the promise of work, but they are not being paid half as much as they should be. For the illegal immigrants that come into the country, if there were not big businesses that would hire them KNOWING they are illegal, they wouldn't come here in the first place. I agree with you.

Although human migration has existed for hundreds of thousands of years, immigration in the modern sense refers to movement of people from one nation-state to another, where they are not citizens. Immigration implies long-term permanent residence (and often eventual citizenship) by the immigrants: tourists and short-term visitors are not considered immigrants (see expatriates). However, seasonal labour migration (typically for periods of less than a year) is often treated as a form of immigration. But yes, i believe that it has become a new form of slavery!
