The fanny pack (US), hip pack (Canada), or bum bag (UK, Australia) is a small fabric pouch - which comes in many shapes, sizes and colours - secured with a zipper and worn at the waist by a strap around the hips. Often used by travelers and was more popular during the 1990s. It can be slung either forward, side or to the rear of the wearer and is often considered as utility over fashion.

I know that even though we all speak English on this board that there is a difference in the use of term "Fannie". Fannie Pack is in fact an "American" term and fanny (fannie ) in America can mean one of two things. Fanny can be a slang term for butt, rump, or bum. Fanny can also be a nickname for the woman's name Frances.

I don't know which country the Fannie Pack, Bum bag, or hip pack first appeared in, but I did think it important to define it and explain the american terminology. Blessings to all my worldwide neighbors.

If I remember correctly, the fanny pack was originally used in skiing and hiking in the late 1960s and picked up as an accessory by the mainstream fashion designers in the early 1970s.

Then the kids clothing people made it into all kinds of shapes and colors (like fuzzy teddy bears faces and glow-in-the-dark shapes) and the fanny pack moved into the realm of stand-up comedians and off-color jokes.

timmie is wrong

fanny isn't British slang for down there, it's slang for breasts.

when americans go on holiday there and use the term "fanny pack" the locals will often giggle.

They call them "bum bags."

Fanny - This is the word for a woman's front bits! One doesn't normally talk about anyone's fanny as it is a bit rude. You certainly don't have a fanny pack, or smack people on their ****** - you would get arrested for that! Careful use of this word in the UK is advised!
