Chances are that you won't be here long enough to see all five boroughs of New York City. So, here's what I would do:

1. Look at Queens on the way in from JFK Airport. Don't plan on seeing Brooklyn, Staten Island, and the Bronx.

2. Focus your attention on the Borough of Manhattan. Manhattan is not like Tokyo, which is spread out and time consuming to visit. There are two areas of Manhattan -- Midtown and Downtown (South of Midtown). If you like long walks you can walk between the two. Otherwise, you might start studing the subway system, which can be tough. The key to Manhattan is that it is a grid with avenus running east-west (lower numbers on the east) and streets running north-south (lower numbers in the South). It is ALMOST all numbered. The exception is Broadway (north-south), which runs diagonally crossing many of the avenues.

3. Buy a book with the attractions in Manhattan described. In Midtown, for example, you will want to see the Broadway theater districts in the 40s, mostly.

4. Plan your trip while you're still at home.

Downtown
You can start in Lower Manhattan! You can visit the Statue Of Liberty and if you don't wanna travel to the island you can see the statue from Battery Park. In Battery Park, they have many mini shops and great food. A few blocks up is the World Trade Center also known as Ground Zero. They have already placed the first beams for the Freedom tower so you could see that. For the Next one you might wanna take a cab to Brooklyn and stop around the brooklyn Brg and you could walk the bridge into manhattan and see the city views.

MIdtown
You can visit the Empire State Building, Time Sq. See the U.N.. Take the 59 Street Bridge Trams see see views of Upper/Lower Manhattan, Bronx, and Queens.

Uptown

You could go to washington Heights on W.181 Street and go shopping in the stores. Go to the GWB park on W.174 Street you could go see The GWB. If you want to go down alittle south you could see more shops on Brdwy

world trade center location (twin towers), to see where they use to stand. Empire State Building, anywhere you feel like - every part of New York is a good place to be. (I've never been there myself - but oh well)
