Why do eggs explode when they are cooked in a microwave? I can understand if they are not shelled but I tried cooking an egg by breaking it into a dish of water and microwaving. I'm still cleaning up the mess.

you need to break the yolk of the egg before microwaving.

I often cook eggs by breaking them into a microwavable dish (spray with PAM so they come out easily) being sure to break the yolk, then just cook 30 seconds at a time. Sometimes they'll still pop a little, but if you put some waxed paper over the dish then no mess!

I think that because microwave heats from the centre to the outside, and the food expands as it becomes warmer without any air to help it, that is why it would explode.

Poor you, though sorry, I could not help giggling. I had a neighbour once who had a carer The carer put a potato in the microwave to cook - and we were still cleaning off potato residue all over the kitchen 10 days later!!!

Someone told me that when you cook eggs in the microwave to poke holes in the eggs and they won't explode but I havent tried it yet.

Because eggs have membranes. A scrambled egg won't pop near as bad as a whole egg. Also, you can just poke the yolk wl a fork to break it, w/o whisking, and nuke. A turntable is best, as popping mostly happens w/ hot spots. I'd skip the water bath, too, and just use nonstick cooking spray in the container.

I dont want to clean your microwave LOL :-)

Eggs are so nice poached or boiled and so quick why bother to try to cook them that way..but if you do need to use the microwave then I think you need to pierce them at the end where the air pocket is.

lol i tried that one time and it did the same to me..
when they are cooked in the microwave there is 2 much pressure inside the egg and the pocket of air bursts.. then the egg expands till it explodes!

The whites cook faster than the yolk,So the white sets yet the yolk is still moist .Creating steam which has to escape somewhere hence exploding eggs.

You can poach them in the microwave, put one egg in a ramikin dish or cup, prick the yolk with a pin then cook for approx 1.5 - 2.5 minutes. yumm
