Many 'paints' (especially 'house paints' both 'interior' and 'exterior'and any 'spray paints') have 'fumes' ... if you inhale these fumes 'too much for too long' you can get 'high' but you can also get EXTREMELY SICK ... they can do anything from causing 'extreme heart damage' to causing DEATH. You should NEVER 'huff' 'paint' or 'glue' or anything that may 'get you high' and you should ALWAYS use them ONLY 'according to directions' ... but if you are painting an 'inside room' you should also 'go OUTDOORS' every twenty minutes or so and 'breathe deeply' until you 'feel totally well' again ... you'll be surprised at how 'easy' it is to get 'sick' from just 'breathing in' the air while you are painting ... and also how 'easy it is' to RECOVER just by going outside and 'breathing deeply' a few times.

almost all paints have voc's (volatile organic compounds). these are the compounds that evaporate and pollute the air. breathing these, especially concentrated in a small room without ventilation can cause respiratory problems. some people are more sensitive than others. oil based usually have more than latex. read the label or ask for low voc paint if you are concerned. also some compounds can be ingested through the skin and be harmful that way.

I assume you mean paint, not pain.

The chemicals in the paint are released into the air. Then you breath them in and damage your lungs.
