But when I press the shock button, it only makes him yelp. Is there a brand that just makes the dog drop to the ground, like on Cops?

These do work for correcting bad behavior..I wish it was legal to put them on prisoners especailly repeat offenders. They do make some that are adjustable with settings up to 7 or so. You may need to put longer electrodes on them to really touch the dogs skin. Remember they are used for training only... not for fun. If the dog is smart enough it wont take long and they will learn not do what ever you are trying to correct. It sounds like it is working since they yelp...do they keep doing what it is that is causing you to punish them? If so maybe they need more than just a shock collar.

Why would you want your dog to drop down to the ground? What habit are you trying to break? Living? Try putting the collar on yourself, press the shock button and see if you yelp. I found the electric fence which incorporates a shock collar worked well for keeping dogs from running, but all it was required was one shock. My dog would not cross the fence, even when it was off, until I told him it was okay. But what you are doing sounds more like torture! I certainly wouldn't use something that 'dropped him to the ground'. Perhaps if you could say what problem you are trying to 'cure' you could get more helpful answers. Good luck!

Shock collars are only useful if you know how to train a dog. The dogs on Cops are trained, your dog is not and knows nothing apparently. You and your dog will be much better off to enroll in a local obedience class and learn how to train your dog to sit and down. You don't need a shock collar for that.

Thank you for asking a question on this.
There is nothing wrong with using a shock collar, but a dog has to be trained to use them.
My boyfriend is a k9 officer and uses a shock collar on his k9, as do all k9 officers.
First off, you need to let your dog wear it for ten days without using it so that he doesn't relate the collar with the shock.
K9s are trained to respond to verbal commands first and then the collar is used if they don't listen the first time (as k9s have to obey on first command).
If you really are interested in how to correctly use a shock collar on your dog, please email me and I will have my boyfriend explain everything.
Right now your dog doesn't understand what you are asking him, just that he's getting hurt for no reason.

there are such things but, if you have the money, those invisible fences work like a charm. If you bought the collar for barking purposes, then its your own fault for not being able to control your own dog. Besides.....obedience school or a change of pace of how you treat your dog is a better answer.

Why on earth do you want to shock an animal you supposedly love? All you're doing is causing your dog to be mistrustful when if you bothered to train him correctly using positive methods you wouldn't have to be so brutal to him now. Stick it on your own neck and see how it goes then maybe you'll understand why he yelps.

You don't need a shock collar, that is mean. I don't know why they make those things. You just need to have control over your dog, & make him listen to you. You are the master, your voice should say it all.

Oh those things work great! We have one for our choc. lab Woodie,a nd choc lab. rotti mix Charlie. Unfortunately ours came off on one of our dogs so we cant find it outside. Either turn it up higher. Or return it (if it hasn't been used alot) and get one for stubborn dogs. Then you can turn it up really high. Thats what Charlie needs he has the thickest head. he hasn't quite learned that pain means stop. hell get zapped stop for a second look around and then continue what he was doing!
Hope This helps.
