A very active dog can wear down his nails while walking or running on cement. However, if this doesn't happen, then the nails (especially the dewclaw) can grow so long that they will actually grow into the foot pad. I saw a dog's nails that were so long that they grew into the pad and out the other side!! Keep an eye on the dogs nails, and trim accordingly.

The toenails can get snagged on things and pull out and bleed all over the place. In addition to being painful, overlong toenails can cause splaying of the toes and feet. If you don't want to cut the nails yourself (and I wouldn't for a Rottie), take her to the vet. It doesn't cost much and you will both feel better.

I have a German Sheppard and I worked at a vet.... If you don't trim your dogs nails they will grow too long and your dog will walk on them! It is like you walking on your knuckles all day, it harms them in the way that they try to take the pressure off their toes and it can deform their legs and cause arthritis. This is for a dog who stays in most of the time... If you have a dog who stays outside alot and has access to a road (when taken for a walk) or a sidewalk or who may have an enclosed dog pen with a concrete floor then don't trim as often because these things help to "shave" your doggies toenails. Best thing to do is ask your dog's vet. and see what he/she says is best for the dog. Good Luck

Cutting their toenails does not hurt unless you cut too far...much like cutting your own nails too close to the skin...they get sore don't they?...Same thing happens to the dogs. There is a vein called the "quik" that extends into the nails as well. If you cut close to it, they get sore toes...if you actually cut it, they will bleed and that part hurts...
Best bet: take the dog to a groomer and have them show you how to cut them the first few times until you are comfortable.
I was a groomer for 6 years and I was more than happy to teach people how to cut their dog's own nails. It isn't hard, but it can be nerve-wrenching!! Especially with dark/black nails

I'm a pet groomer.. It is very important to ur dogs health to have their nails properly trimmed at least once a month.. Long toenails can grow into the pawpads or they will grow to the point where they break off and they will bleed and be very painful... It would be like us spliting our fingernails into the fleshly part.. Petsmart trims dogs nails for $8 you just need to have written proof of the rabies vaccine with u... becareful if u decide to do it urself.. if u cut to short it will bleed.. then u will need to apply quickstop to stop the bleeding

Keeping a dogs toenails trim keeps them healthier because if they are too long the dog will not walk around or even want to run. Toenails that get too long are painful to the dog as they are not able to walk on the pads of their feet normally. Most vets clip nails for $10.
Best of luck to you.

Letting a dogs nails grow too long will cause the nails to curve and deform the bones in the paws which will make walking painful. Dogs nails should always be kept trimmed!

If your dog gets regular exercise on a hard surface then that should keep the nails worn down. However, if they grow they need to be clipped because they are at risk of getting caught and breaking. Also if you allow them to get too long they start to distort the feet and cause discomfort to the dog.

Your dogs nails will continue to grow and ruin their feet, and curl under even growing in the foot or they will possibly break off when they get so long and will break into the quick and the dog can get nail infecitons from it.

Hi, You have to be careful when cutting dogs toenails, if you cut too deep they will bleed, i would take him/her to the vets. Ask the vets advice on cutting and how short they should be.
