It is a federal thing by the Food and Drug Admistration: ONE YEAR from the date on the original prescription. It does not matter what state you live in, this applies within the USA.

My pharmacist told me the last time I presented a prescription to her that I had refills already available, told me it would be good for 6 months.

There is usually a date when the prescription is invalid, but it's usually a year.

They are usually good for a year. I live in Florida so I don't know if that's our state's law or if it only applies to certain drugs.
