Custom homes range dramatically. Depending on the location and the extent of the design, that is incorporated into the home. Custom homes are typically more expensive than your average track home (home built within a planned community/subdivision) due to some of the following factors. Land Expense: the cost of an individual parcel of land will typically be more expensive than buying a subdivided parcel, with a factory built home. Construction Expense: Custom homes are built with a lot more unique ideas, which means an Architect is working on just one home with a specific design raising the final price per square foot. An additional factor of a custom home, is building materials, these are usually of higher quality and more expensive sense they are not bought in bulk, as a large subdivision Developer would purchase them.
With these factors in mind, you can at least determine that a custom home is more expensive than a similarly located condo or track home; however to get an actual price of a specific home's worth, you would have to seek out multiple comps and variables.
Final answer: They can range from 10s of thousands to 10s of millions.

I live in Ohio, and built a custom home 2 years ago. Where I live, they tend to start around $120.00 per square foot, and go up from there. Here's the kicker though....if you are willing to be the Contractor, and sub out, then you can save yourselves alot of money! Example: A builder wanted $170.00 per square foot to build our house. We built the house for $112.00 per square foot. I have granite in all the bathrooms, including the laundry room. Custom tiled showers and floors. Cherry cabinets through-out the home, and over 1200 sq. ft. of Brazilian Hardwood Cherry floors. Those are just some of my favorites!

depends on a number of things...who builds it, how long it takes, what you want in it, how big it is, where it is getting built...the list goes on. you would have to talk to someone who could give you specifics. because if you want a 20,000 square foot house with marble floors and granite countertops and mahogany cabinits, its going to cost you CONSIDERABLY more than a 5000 square foot house with lenolium floors and wood countertops.
