Yes it can be done using the "SUMIF" command.

Assuming you have numbers in cells A1 to A5 the equation would be:

=SUMIF(A1:A5, "<0")

It will only return the numbers less than zero, you can do the same for greater than zero by copying the function and replacing the "<0" with ">0".

Don't forget to keep the double quotations "" around the less than sign.
