I have an issue. My sister and I along with another person have been living together. I partial rent just like they do. Except she and I got upset with each other and she left. I have called a couple of times and she is not returning calls. I have not been able to go to work because I have no key to the house. I have no key to the mailbox either. I have just been a mess. The house is in my step dads and mothers name. But, my mom passed away. According to the mortgage company my mom is still alive. Would it be illegal to change the door knobs? What would you do in this situaiton. I only have my duplicate checks which show that I do pay rent that is all. I am scared to leave only to come home with my stuff kicked out on the curb.

I have been calling her she will not return my calls. She has been gone for quite awhile. I did not think my sister would leave and put me in a position where I can't check my mail or afraid to leave the house.

Seems to me that your sister has no more rights to this house than you do. Can you talk to your step dad? He is the one who should be in control of the locks. Why doesn't HE have a key you can get? What about the third person? Does he or she have a key?

All that said, a good locksmith may be able to make you a key to the existing doors. However he may be suspicious, so first you need to ask your stepdad to change the locks or give you a key. Since you are a renter you don't have the rights to change the locks without notifying the owner, your stepdad.

The other roommate has a house key, right? It should be easy to get their key and make a copy anyplace that does that. I know here Walmart, the local hardware store and local five and dime store make keys. Getting a key copied would only cost a few dollars while changing the door knobs would cost anywhere from $30 or more depending on how many you need to change.

That would work for the house key but the mailbox key is usually property of the US Postal Service depending on how the box is set up. You might be able to get a copy from them but you'd have to have something that proves you live at that address. Usually they want a lease or ownership papers so you might have to go through your step dad.

are you serious you don't have a key to your own house, call a locksmith to change the locks. You will have to show some proof of identification which won't be a problem, and keep trying to get a hold of your sister and this other person so you guys can work this out.

I am very confused. If the person you got mad at left the house then weren't you still in the house therefore still had your key?

Good luck!

Call a locksmith and ask him to let you in, show him the checks if he asks. When you get in move out and then go to small claims court.

Just put some Vaseline on the door knobs. That will keep her out.
