Requirements to become a police officer vary and how you become a police officer varies depending on the police department. Some relatively common minimum requirements include having at least a high school diploma or ged, being a citizen, being at least 21 years old, having a valid driver's license, and having no felony convictions. Some relatively common steps in hiring processes include application, written test, physical fitness test, interview, drug test, medical examination, and background investigation.

You must be smarter than the average criminal.
Tougher that the average crack head.
Strong enough to wrestle one guy to the ground and hold his buddy off with your free hand while calling for dispatch to send help.
You must be able to work up to 24 hours straight with no sleep while working a homicide case.
You must be able to withstand the sight of some 4 year old child being sexually assaulted in a video tape of the chit heads house you are raiding while you can only think of your 4 year old at home.
You must be able to scrape a dead body off the pavement and go eat dinner 10 minutes later because it is the first chance you have had in the last 6 hours.
You have to have thick skin so you can take it when the guy you just witnessed beating someone tells you that you are only arresting him because he is black and that he is going to kill you and your family when he gets out of jail.
BUT..you get to retire in 25 years...if you make it that long.
I know I am missing some things but I am sure fellow officers will post up.
