1998 Mercury Mystique GS 80,000 miles 4 door inline 4 cyl. Front wheel drive. I looked at the car. It looks really really nice. They are asking for 2500 dollars. Does anybody have any advice on that type of car? Is it dependable? Is it reliable? What is your opinion on this type of car? I need to know. Thank you.

Take the car on a test drive. Used cars should be tested for half an hour. I would see how it feels on some really bad roads. Check out the average value online, you can go up or down from there. Take it to a mechanic you trust and have him/her put in writing what is wrong and $ to have it repaired. You'll deduct this amount from any agreed upon price. Check the oil for metal, check for oil leaks, tire tread, brakes, etc. See if the windshield wipers work (if its not raining you might not think of doing this),check if the lights work ( see the car when its dark). Any car can turn out to be reliable, any can turn out to be junk, you never know with a used car. Hope it turns out well!

According to consumer reports 1998 was that models worst year for reliability (rankings go excellent, very good, good, fair, poor). 1998 is ranked fair, where as the other years are ranked good.

Most things are fair-good. Fuel system and transmission were ranked poor. And the engine major was ranked very good (engine minor and engine cooling is fair -- electrical system was also fair).

It's a Ford. Looks isn't everything when buying a car. Get it checked out by a mechanic.

Talk them down to $2k. They probably are desperate if they're only charging $2,500. Make them take less cash. :)
