yes insurance companies will try this - best thing to do is to swap over your policy from the one car to your new one - if you cancel a policy they are well within their rights to charge you the full amount of the insurance - so just tell them u want to update your insurance to your new car - u may still end up paying more than you bargained for
i hope this is of help
but in future for cheaper car insurance check out
confused.com
then try insure supermarket.com
then try compare the market.com
this should give you cheaper car insurance

Look at it this way:
Your premium was £1600 when you took the insurance. You could have had to pay all of that up-front.

However, the insurance company have effectively lent you the money, enabling the premium to be paid and the documents to be issued.

You have a contract to repay that loan in instalments, and that's what you have to do. It's just the same as borrowing the money elsewhere to pay the premium, you still have to repay it to someone.

Best way for you is to change the car with your present company, and when the current policy expires search for a better premium.

there is usually a clause in the small print which will say any cancellation after 6 months means no refunds on any prt of the unsed term of the policy, 1600 is an awful lot of money to pay, i dont know if your only 18years old and got an XR3i or whatever the flash car is of today, but get this, i know someone who drives a skoda felicia and only pays 140. might be better off getting a lower group car and going on two holidays with the saved insurance money?
