holding on to the treadmill rails...........?
I know that you shouldnt but if you do not for the entire time but say you are doing a 40 minute workout and about 8-10 minutes of that workout you are holding on to the rail will that make a significant difference? in calories...
does anyone know how much you loose...

Holding on to the rails is a bad idea because you can easily injure yourself. i would recommend that you slow down to a brisk walk a few times during your workout if your body needs a break.

It will make a difference, but it may not be a significant one. If you are using a very steep grade (incline), then holding on may be safer than walking without using them. If you are relatively flat and using the railing to keep up with the pace of the treadmill, then you are basically cheating yourself. It's also a more natural motion for you to allow your arms to move when you walk/run. As for a specific calorie amount, your best bet is to buy a heart rate monitor that has a caloric expenditure option (Polar has a decent priced one that works well) so you know what you're burning. You can find them at most sporting good stores or online.
