African (-American or whatever).

Not a racial question; i've simply never seen a black child/adult with down syndrome. Are there certain races in which the disease is prevalent? Is it just white/caucasions?

Nothing wrong with the question... yes, Down syndrome occurs in all races. I have a son with DS and know lots of families of all different ethnic origins who have children with DS. The odds are pretty much the same across all races I believe.

I would like to make one little correction though...Down syndrome is not a disease. It is a genetic anomaly. It cannot be "caught" like a disease...it occurs at or near conception.

Yes, and don't listen to what some people answer saying that is a dumb question. You simply stated that is was not a raciest question just clearly and observation. Yes, they can however it doesn't have a racial background it is more or less the luck of the draw. MY sister (we are white) has a child with downs. However, I too have noticed that I do not see many in fact now that I think of it I don't think I have ever seen an african american with downs. I have however seen mental retardation in an african american. Our company works with the handicap all the time. Recently I just visited the vocational center and I recall there were more caucasions with it, also in high school i recall seeing mostly whites with down. There may be a possibility? I think it iwas an intersting question.

As women age whatever race they may be there is definitely a risk of getting a child with Down Syndrome. The older women are , especially those who are aged 35 and above have a larger risk of getting a child with Down Syndrome.

I have the same question. I am sixty years old and have never seen a black person with downs. And, nora85, I hope you have matured enough by now to respect a legitimate question.

Down syndrome (DS) is the most common identified cause of mental retardation in the United States. The prevalence (approximately one in 800 live-born infants) is similar among all racial groups.

Any ethnicity can have downs. Children who are born with downs have an extra chromosome.
