I often give this advice:

Start with cucumber rolls. Except for the seaweed, there's nothing in there that should be new. The rice is different as it contains a vinegar/sugar mix and is sticky. A cucumber roll lets you experience the taste and texture of the rice and seaweed.

One that works for you, switch to crab. Most sushi crab is fake, a mixture of other mild fishes mixed with a little real crab to make it taste like crab. It's called khani (or kani). Try it "nigiri" style, which means that they'll put a stick of it on top of a ball of rice.

Since kani is cooked, mild, and made to taste like something you already know (assuming you've had crab), there's nothing scary about it. And you've already tried to rice. And, if there's a seaweed "belt," that's not new either.

When you're ready to try raw fish, I suggest red tuna, called maguro. Although tuna, these days, is not as good as it once was (good tuna is very rare and expensive due to overfishing), it's still perfectly fine and is actually more palatable to beginners due to it's lack of taste. Try it either nigiri style or in a maki roll (tekka maki).

Once you're there, you're now ready to expand out. Where you go is subject to your interests. Salmon and yellowtail are pretty much standards. A bit stronger than tuna, but still not terribly fishy.

I would order rolls that come with cooked seafood first to see if you even like the most basic sushi. Then you can try rolls woth say, salmon or tuna in them. I'm pretty squeamish with some of the types of sushi they have (like eel) but I generally like the rolls. My suggestion.. Try a philly role, maybe a california roll or something with shrimp. Enjoy..

Not all sushi is raw....... so you can try Smoked Salmon and the shrimp is cooked too. The crab will be cooked as well........ so you can start there and " get your feet wet" . A lot of it depends on what you like. Salmon, tuna and yellowtail ( raw ) are are pretty mild, I'd save the octopus and the eel for when you're feeling more adventurous. Sit at the sushi bar and ASK QUESTIONS..... Tell them you're just starting out.....

tuna or salmon.... try and order a special roll with some fried shrimp and nice sauces. Dont order sashimi.. (just raw fish on rice)... that will put you off if its your first time.
