I have played volleyball a long time and I will have you know that setting is a difficult position, you are supossed to touch the ball EVERY time it comes to your side of the net and your rhythm controls the team...You need to realize that first off, secondly your hands should be in the shape of the ball, but setting requires only your finger tips, bend your knees, the majority of your power should come from your legs (unless your are jumpsetting but that's a different thing) your right foot should be a little bit ahead of your left (because you want to be off the net) and your feet should always be set on the ground. Before you set the ball work on your jump step, in other words you need to jump step into every set (this helps keep your feet straight) Once you have your jump step down work on setting the ball your thumbs and index fingers should make a diamond shape around the ball. You can practice this by throwing and catching the ball only with your fingertips, another important thing to know is that your hands should be right above your forehead, the ball should hit you in the forehead if you move your hands, you can practice that too don't worry it doesn't hurt! When you actually get to the setting of the ball you should have your legs slightly bent and push up your entire body when you set the ball and don't forget to follow thru your hands should stay in the air like superman! A lot of setting is hustling so just hustle and have fun and the other stuff will come with practice!

When getting to the volleyball, run in a regular/relaxed manner. Do not run with your arms stiff by your side or with your hands in the air. Once you get to the ball, your hands come up to your forehead with your thumbs pointing to your forehead using both arms and legs to get the ball where it needs to go. Yes, you can use "the diamond" as a guide, also known as the triangle or you can position your hands as if drinking milk from a regular sized bowl of cereal. A great website to give you visuals is www.usavolleyball.org, click on Education, Publications and Skill Posters.
Another thing...never set with your fingertips. To set you must have "soft" hands, always set with your "fingerprints." Yes, it does make us cringe...this usually indicates whether that individual is a natural setter or not. GOOD LUCK!

I think the answer above me is about how to serve... the question is about setting.
Also, sorry to answer your question with another question, but why can't you ask for help from another setter? Or coach?
Anyway, I was a hitter when I played in school. But we still rotated all positions. I wasn't the best at setting, but I never got called on lifting. I had good technique, was just better at hitting!!! I always remember making a diamond with my first fingers together and my thumbs pointing together (but not touching) above my head. Then centering the ball in that diamond, letting my hand rest when the ball comes to them then pushing them up to set the ball? It is so hard to explain, wish I could just show you!!!
How bout this website... it pretty much says everything I did, but with more explanation

A setter should relax the fingers with palms facing out and as the ball comes down and sets between your thumbs and fingers aim the ball where you want it to go and push it off with your fingers. A little practice with setting it to your self will help immensely

hold the volleyball between your hands, on the tips, over your head. this is the most common position-but have fun with it. you might find something that'll make your coach cringe but as long as you can get the ball up and out for your hitters, anything is better than nothing. good luck tomorrow!

You should use what works best for you. I usually make like shooting a basketball when I set a volleyball (with my fingertips and arms in a throwing motion).
